Overview

This position’s primary purpose in the lab will be to provide basic technical support to our very active and growing animal modeling project and perform basic behavioral analysis.

Job Summary:

This position’s primary purpose in the lab will be to provide basic technical support to our very active and growing animal modeling project and perform basic behavioral analysis.

Organizational status:

This position will be a basic component of the Transgenic Animal Models group in the Hayden lab, and will be reporting directly to the research coordinator Ultimately the position will report to relevant investigators.

Work Duties:

  • Updating mouse colony records , regular inventory of the colony.
  • Documenting and setting up breeding pairs.
  • Checking health status, follow up timed pregnancy matings, checking for plugs.
  • Administration of drugs to the mice (Oral lavage, IP injections, Tail vein injections).
  • Harvesting mouse tail cuttings.
  • Assisting with preparation of genomic tail DNA
  • Removal of mouse tissue for analysis.
  • Collection of blood samples from the mice: saphenous vein puncture and cardiac puncture.
  • Health monitoring of the mice and observing development of any abnormality, treating the sick ones, and daily maintenance of mice.
  • Other responsibilities as directed by supervisor and required by Lab.

Errors:

The work described basically follows well established protocols and techniques. The position does not require significant innovative analysis. All important decisions will be checked by the research coordinator and the investigators who are leading the project. Accuracy is very important. Errors will be costly and will lead to mixing up of mice in experiments which will result in significant delays and cost overruns.

Supervision:

  • Supervised by the research coordinator for all tasks.
  • Daily reports to the research coordinator.
  • Weekly reports to Dr. Michael Hayden, Principal Investigator and other relevant investigators at lab meetings.

The Position has no supervisory responsibility.

Working conditions:

Position is based at the CMMT animal facility and the laboratory of Dr. Michael Hayden in the Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics, which is a state of the art research facility with all required safety precautions already in place.

Qualifications

  • Minimum, High School Diploma.
  • 2-3 years of work experience is preferred.
  • Effective oral and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow established guidelines and protocols and to complete work assignments in effective and efficient manner.
  • Computer experience would be an asset.
  • Background in Science.
